Choosing a Skateboard Deck

Welcome to Hare Razor, your number one stop if you are looking for an outstanding skateboard deck. We know about skateboarding and we know what skateboarders like when choosing decks and accessories. Our mission is to provide you with the best skateboarding hardware and equipment. You will find here the best brands available in the skateboarding market today, Zoo York, Speed Demon, Plan B, Dogtown, Black Label, Riot Gear, Consolidated, Riviera, Alva, you name it, we have them all. If you like decks and accessories used by famous skateboarders like Jason Adams, Brad Staba or Donny Barley you’ve come to the right place.

Remember that for choosing a skateboard deck you should first consider why you want it. Are you a bit of a technical dude who likes to ride ledges, stairs and rails? Or you prefer skating on vertical ramps and pools? Maybe you’re just the kind of guy who just wants a skateboard deck for transportation. Well, the good news are that no matter your skateboarding style, we can provide you with the right deck, of course without forgetting all the accessories that will let you tune up your deck for maximum enjoyment. Also we always take in mind the safety issue. Skateboarding is a cool sport, but it’s better if you are adequately secured when you practice it.

What the Pro's do

Normally pro skateboarders will recommend you to check a deck’s two main dimensions, length and width. The first one will depend entirely on your height and how you feel more comfortable. Just try some models until you find someone you like. The second measure is a little bit trickier and will also depend on your riding style. Let’s have a look at it.

If you like to ride ledges and rails you’ll probably need a deck that measures around 8” wide or less. Anything larger and you could have problems doing some flip tricks on the streets. On the other hand, the transition style, which involves skateboarding over vertical ramps and pools, is mostly done with decks measuring around 8.25” to 8.5” wide. If you plan to do high jumps on vertical ramps or big backyard pools, some extra width could be quite helpful. Finally, if you want a skateboard deck just for transportation and cruising, then the bigger the better. In this last case a big deck will give you more balance and control.

Another factor that is also important is the concave angle of the deck. Usually, they come in three shapes, mellow, medium and steep. Our general experience tells us that with a mellow deck you could feel a little flat-footed, while with a steep concave deck, you would probably feel like your feet are really attached to the deck. However, again we would recommend you to pick up whatever makes you feel more comfortable.

Personalizing Your Board

We’ve reached the mighty and powerful looking factor. Obviously, this is not a technical factor and it won’t affect the skateboard deck at all. Nevertheless, it is important if you are serious about skateboarding. You should enjoy every ride in your skateboard deck, whether you are riding for a skateboarding street championship or just going to the supermarket to buy some groceries. The look of your deck will tell others about your likings, your style and your personality. Also remember that skateboarding is not a sport only practiced by men. Girls are pretty good at it too, if you don’t believe us just check out the riding style of Elissa Steamer and Lyn-Z Adams. We’re pretty sure they are serious stuff in the skateboarding realm.

What about the accessories for your skateboard deck? A great deck won’t be that great without great accessories, like trucks, wheels, bearings and even grip tape. We are loaded with many pieces of hardware of the best brands available in this market so you can customize your skateboard deck with total freedom. We want you to feel you’re getting an awesome final product. That is what our job is about. In fact, is not our job anymore, it’s our passion.

Finally, just some general advice to take care of your new acquired skateboard deck. Do not expose it to water or extreme heat. Also, use some grip tape in order to protect the deck and the accessories. We really hope you choose a great deck but most important of all, we wish you enjoy your skateboarding ride.
